All hens are chickens, but not all chickens are hens. The term chicken refers to the breed, and is used for both
male and female birds.
A hen is an adult female chicken. Young hens are called pullets. Hens have a less flamboyant plumage than their male
counterparts and lay eggs.
A male chicken is called a rooster, or cockerel when juvenile. Castrated roosters are called capons. Roosters can normally be differentiated from hens by
their striking plumage, marked by long flowing tails
and bright pointed feathers on their necks.
